DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS TO RECEIVE FREE WIRELESS BROADBAND SERVICES
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. (January 30, 2006) --- With the successful installation of critical infrastructure technology, iPortUSA is set to begin a beta test of its free wireless internet service within downtown San Diego, California. This new service will make San Diego one of the first major U.S. cities to receive free wireless, broadband internet access. San Diego-based iPortUSA, Inc. along with strategic partner, Embee Technologies, Inc. have been developing the new network and portal website over the course of the last year and anticipate the launch by February of this year.
Many cities across the U.S., including Philadelphia and Tempe, have initiated wireless, broadband services to attract businesses and potential residents. The benefits of iPort's e-services; including free internet access and e-mail, localized content, customizable serivces, advertising and ecommerce solutions for businesses, are viewed as a major incentive by newcomers. iPort chose San Diego as its initial roll-out area due to the city's commitment to growth and quality of life. The seventh largest metropolis in America, San Diego boasts a tech-savvy and community-oriented populace that will benefit from the ease of use and availability of the iPort network and will provide an excellent test bed for the project.
Once launched, San Diegians will have free wireless internet access anywhere in the San Diego metropolitan area (though initial rollout areas will be limited to the downtown - with the harbor, marina and airport areas to follow). In addition to internet access, iPort will also introduce SIP telephony service within six months. SIP telephony allows users to make phone calls using the iPort high-speed network for just pennies a call; less than landline or mobile calls.
iPort also plans to use the free network as a springboard for community development throughout San Diego. By providing charities and organizations with high profile web spaces and developing new contribution channels, iPort is confident that it can bolster many worthy programs. In addition, iPort’s business applications will make an immediate impact on the community; e-commerce tools will be made available to local merchants and employment searches will be more targeted and specific than nationwide services.
The free internet service is supported by local business advertising and marketing; much like network television. But because the iPort network can provide information to specific areas, businesses can target their advertising dollar much more efficiently. This sales advantage drives the sponsorships needed for the network to remain free to the community.
"San Diego has always been at the heart of technology and innovation," said John Thompson, CEO of iPortUSA. "With the introduction of the iPort wireless broadband network, the best just got better."
